The individual and couple therapy program is excited to announce an unusual year of seminars in which we will approach our work -- both theoretically and clinically -- through reading and discussing important literary works in addition to our usual case supervisions and journal articles. In reading particular novels, members of the seminar will all have the same "clinical" exposure which we think will promote lively discussions as well as deeper understanding of Object Relations. We will read four novels -- including Fitzgerald and Nathaniel West -- over the course of the year in conjunction with related theoretical papers.

Our monthly study group, which explores the clinical and theoretical contributions of W.R. Bion, is accepting three new members. Our work together is intense, collegial, and exciting. Not only do we discuss Bion's own writings - Elements of Psychoanalysis and Attention and Interpretation - but we also read articles by other clinicians who apply his ideas to the practice of psychotherapy. New members will have ample opportunity to familiarize themselves with the work we have already covered.

This unique twice-monthly workshop will consider the radical contributions of Melanie Klein and Donald Winnicott to psychoanalysis, focusing on their relevance to the understanding and treatment of patients that present with borderline, narcissistic and/or schizoid states. It will explore the overlapping and contrasting themes, both explicit and implicit, in their work.
To appreciate, in depth, their theoretical and clinical approaches, we'll study Klein and Winnicott's main papers and discuss clinical material to illustrate the application of their ideas and their implications for technique. We'll also consider some major contributions made by contemporary analysts working in the Object Relations traditions based on these ideas.

The Melanie Klein home page is currently unavailableA psychoanalyst who completed psychiatric residency at Harvard and a DuPont-Warren Fellowship at the Tavistock Centre (London), Dr. Frank received analytic training at the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute where he is a Teaching Analyst. He is chief of the Couple Therapy Section at the Washington School of Psychiatry. In addition to teaching and practicing psychoanalysis and marital therapy, Dr. Frank is widely sought as a clinical supervisor and lecturer. He speaks on British Object Relations Theory, psychological life in the nuclear age, and psychoanalytic approaches to theater and film.

at the Washington School of Psychiatry in DC and in systems family therapy
at the Ackerman Institute of Family Therapy. She is a former faculty member
of the Washington School of Psychiatry and the National Institute for the
Psychotherapies (NIP), and supervises in the couple and family program at
the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health.
